Winfield holds off Fort Scott boys' rally, 56-52

FRONTENAC -- Fort Scott High's boys rallied to within 2 points of Winfield late in the third quarter of Friday night's first-round meeting in Frontenac's Kansas National Guard Invitational here Thursday night. But the third-seeded Vikings (7-3) scored 8 of the first 10 points of the fourth quarter and were able to hold off the sixth-seeded Tigers, 56-52.

Fort Scott (3-7) will play McDonald County, Mo., tonight at 6:45 p.m. in the old gymnasium in one of the consolation semifinals. Winfield, which remains unbeaten against non-league opponents (5-0), takes on second-seeded Riverton in a championship semifinal at 8:30 in the old gym. The Rams (8-2) beat McDonald County, 56-50.

Tonight's game will be the 2,000th in the history of the Tiger boys' program.

On the other side of the bracket, fifth-seeded Nevada beat Frontenac, 62-57, while top seed Oklahoma City-Frederick Douglass destroyed Baxter Springs, 122-30. Douglass (12-3) is the three-time defending Class 6A State champion in Oklahoma and features Oklahoma State signee Stephen Clark. The Trojans led 73-15 at halftime and 102-27 after three.

Nevada (7-5) faces Douglass at 8:30 tonight in the main gym. Baxter Springs (0-8) and Frontenac (5-4) face each other in consolation play at 6:45 in the main gym.

After a tight first quarter that ended with Winfield holding a 15-12 lead, the Vikings pulled away with a 13-3 run to go up 30-19 in the second before the Tigers scored the final 4 points of the half.

Winfield led 36-28 midway through the third. Josh Davenport made two free throws and Kaleb DeLaTorre scored 8 straight Tiger points, including two 3-pointers, to bring Fort Scott within 40-38 with less than 2 1/2 minutes left.

Winfield pushed it back to 44-38 at the end of the period. Will Alder, who led the Vikings with 18 points, hit a pair of 3's in the fourth-quarter-opening run to help make it 52-40.

DeLaTorre led the Tigers with 14 points. Alex Fink and Johnathan Stark each scored 12.
