Labette posts sweep in conference twinbill

Thursday, January 17, 2013

PARSONS -- Labette swept a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader here Wednesday night. The night began with the Cardinal women handing the still-short-handed Greyhounds a 55-38 defeat.

Despite failing to score for about five minutes in the second half, Labette's men held on for a 54-51 victory over Fort Scott in the nightcap.

Labette's men (3-1 East, 9-7 overall) scored 15 consecutive points to take a 30-17 lead with a minute remaining in the half. By the time Austin Danner scored with 45 seconds to go, the Greyhounds (3-3, 8-8) hadn't scored in abut six minutes.

Fort Scott got within 44-41 after Danner's free throws capped a 6-0 run with about 8 1/2 minutes left in the second half. Labette scored the next 7 to go up by 10 but Travis Gantt's 3-point goal early in that run, which made it 49-41, was the Cardinals' last field goal of the contest.

Fort Scott managed to catch up despite a three-minute long stretch in which the teams combined to score one point. Kevin House converted his steal into a layup with 1:11 to go, then drove in for another basket with 51 seconds left to bring the 'Hounds within 51-48.

House led Fort Scott with 15 points, all in the second half while Danner added 10. Gantt and Anthony Elechi each scored 14 for Labette.

Fort Scott's women (0-6, 3-13), with only six players, lost for the 13th consecutive time. None of the 'Hounds reached double figures as D'Shawna Lee and Burgandie Lewis each scored 9 points. Shawnee Phillips led Labette with 13 points.

Both Greyhound teams begin a five-game homestand Saturday night when Kansas City Kansas comes to Arnold Arena. The women's game tips off at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at 4 p.m. Monday, Cowley will be the opponent for games that tip off at 5:30 and 7:30.
