Tiger wrestlers split league duals at Parsons

Thursday, January 17, 2013

PARSONS -- The rule book gave Coffeyville a 37-36 win over Fort Scott High's wrestling team here Tuesday night, forcing the Tigers to settle for a split in a Southeast Kansas League triangular.

Brendan Blackburn's pin over Austin Ryder at 285 pounds tied the dual before the tie-breakers were checked off. Because Coffeyville won 7 of the 13 matches held, the Golden Tornado received an extra team point for a 37-36 win.

"Tough loss to Coffeyville," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said. "Lost some key matches that could have sealed the victory. Coffeyville did everything right to put themselves in a position to pull out a win. Our kids wrestled hard but we are missing a few key weights that can make a difference."

Fort Scott beat host Parsons, 63-9, and Coffeyville beat the Vikings in the final dual, 36-21.

Both teams in each dual left 120 pounds open and Fort Scott was open at 152 pounds.

Fort Scott (1-2 SEK, 9-5 overall) won four of the first six bouts, going up 24-12. But Coffeyville (2-0, 2-0) won the next four, three of those by pinfall, to go ahead 33-24.

John Metcalf received a forfeit at 195 pounds. But Coffeyville's Grant Newton took a 6-3 decision over B.J. Wilson at 220 to make it 36-30 in the dual for the Nado.

The Tigers won seven bouts by pin in the Parsons dual. The points for the Vikings (0-2, 1-4) were scored on a forfeit at 152 and a 2-point win by Anthony Morton over Cody Bunn at 170.

Only six Tigers got to wrestle two matches. Blackburn had two pins as did Jerad Heckman at 126 pounds. Jake Durossette won both his matches as well. One was by injury default, the other by pin.

The Tigers, who have moved up to No. 4 in Class 4A in the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, will be at the Parsons Tournament Saturday.
