No. 9 Trojans claim win in final seconds

Saturday, January 12, 2013

GIRARD -- Three free throws in the final 35 seconds allowed Girard's girls, ranked No. 9 in Class 4A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, to come away with a 39-36 victory over Fort Scott High in non-league play here Friday night.

Haydn Herlocker, said to have already committed to playing at Pittsburg State, sparked the Trojans (7-2) in the fourth quarter as she scored 11 of her game-high 17 points.

The Tigers (4-5) had a four-game winning streak snapped despite out-rebounding the Trojans by a considerable margin (43-18 unofficially). But after getting out to an 8-2 lead midway through the first quarter, Fort Scott could never pull away.

Hannah Tourtillott scored the Tigers' first 4 points to give them a 4-2 lead. Sidney Maycumber and Jillian Lattimer followed with baskets. But Girard got within 2 points by the end of the period on baskets by Morgan Herlocker and Ashley Johnson.

Fort Scott would enjoy a lead greater than two points just twice more. The first was 9-6 at the beginning of the second period. The second was at 20-16 after Katren Rienbolt scored her first points of the evening to start the third period.

Carly Heatherly made a 3-point basket to give Girard a 25-21 lead with around two minutes to go in the third. Rienbolt made 3-pointer of her own, then one of two free throws to tie the score. Tiera Floyd gave Fort Scott the lead when she took a steal in for a layup. Hannah Jones tied it going into the final stanza when she hit a pair of free throws.

Herlocker scored the first 5 points of the fourth, a 3-point play followed by a jumper, to make it 32-27 with about 4 1/2 minutes to go.

Brianne Lawrence made two free throws for Fort Scott. Then Maycumber scored from the field bring the Tigers within 32-31 with 2:55 to go.

Herlocker's 3-point play with 1:15 to go put the Trojans up 36-34. But Lawrence scored five seconds later to tie it once more.

Heatherly made one of two free throws with 35 seconds left and Herlocker made both of hers with 12.6 seconds remaining.

Rienbolt led Fort Scott with 8 points, 7 of which came in the third quarter. Maycumber and Ashley Cook each scored 7 for the Tigers.

Fort Scott plays Kansas City, Mo., Hogan Prep Thursday evening in the first round of the Frontenac Kansas National Guard Invitational.
