Tigers at inaugural Frontenac tourney next week

Fort Scott High School's basketball teams will take part in the first edition of the Frontenac National Guard Invitational Tournament next week.

Tiger teams will go to Girard tonight to play non-league games against the Trojans before going to the tournament on Thursday.

The boys' tournament is a full eight-team bracket. The Tigers are the No. 6 seed with a 2-6 record. They will face third-seeded Winfield (5-3) at 8:30 p.m. Thursday night in Frontenac's old gymnasium.

Douglass (10-3) is the top seed and will take on Baxter Springs (0-6) at 8:30 Thursday night in the new gymnasium. Douglass is a Class 3A school from the Wichita area.

Riverton is the No. 2 seed at 6-3 and will play McDonald County, Mo. (3-9) at 5 p.m. Thursday in the old gym. Host Frontenac (4-3) is the fourth seed and will face Nevada (5-5) at 6:45 Thursday in the new gym.

Friday's schedule has games at 6:45 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday's losers face off in the earlier slot while the winners play the late game.

Saturday, the seventh-place game will be held at 1 p.m. in the old gym. The fifth-place game takes place at the same time in the new gym. The third-place game is set for 2:45 in the new gym while the championship will be played at 6:15 in the new gym.

Every school in the bracket has a game scheduled for tonight. Nevada will play at McDonald County while Douglass is at home against Belle Plaine, Frontenac travels to Uniontown, Winfield goes on the road to Wellington, Riverton hosts Northeast and Baxter Springs will host Neodesha.

The girls' tournament is a four-team round robin and no team has a losing record. Fort Scott has the worst record at 4-4 but the Tigers have won their last four games. Bishop Hogan Prep of Kansas City, Mo., has a 9-5 record, Baxter Springs is 4-2 and host Frontenac is 6-1.

Thursday's games have Baxter Springs facing CNC League rival Frontenac at 5 p.m. in the new gym while Fort Scott takes on Hogan Prepat 6:45 in the old gym.

Friday, the Tigers play Frontenac at 5 p.m. in the new gym while Baxter and Hogan Prep play at the same time in the old gym.

Saturday's games have Baxter against Fort Scott at 2:45 in the old gym and Hogan Prep facing Frontenac at 4:30 in the new gym.

All four teams have games tonight while Hogan Prep also played Thursday night against Kansas City, Mo., Northeast Law. Hogan also plays at Lexington, Mo., tonight. Fort Scott will be the first Kansas school the Rams have played this season.

Like the boys, Frontenac's girls play at Uniontown tonight while Baxter's host Neodesha.
