Tigers enter wrestling coaches poll at No. 6

Thursday, January 10, 2013

Fort Scott High School's wrestling team has had individuals ranked in their weight classes in Class 4A this season. But this week's poll marks the first time the Tigers have cracked the rankings as a team.

In the poll released Tuesday, Fort Scott makes its debut at No. 6 in the Class 4A poll, one spot behind league rival Chanute.

Fort Scott is 8-1 in duals this season with its only loss coming by one point against Pittsburg last Thursday. The Tigers enter the poll off claiming the team championship at Bonner Springs' Dick Burns Mat Classic, in which nine Tigers earned medals. Four individuals won their weight classes.

Victor Hughes continues to be ranked No. 2 at 138 pounds right behind Bryce Shoemaker of Baldwin, who won a head-to-head match up in the finals at Bonner last week. Also still ranked is John Metcalf, who is third at 195 pounds behind top-ranked Tyler Gastineau of Goodland and No. 2 Skyler Hittle of Concordia.

Three Tigers make their first individual appearances in the rankings. Jerad Heckman comes in at No. 5 at 126 pounds. Dustin Reed, a Colby senior, is No. 1.

Jacob Durossette debuts at No. 4 at 145 pounds. He's only wrestled in two events but is 6-0. His first appearance was in the home triangular last Thursday and he won his weight class at Bonner. He had minor knee surgery in late November. Austin Hughey of El Dorado is No. 1.

Also debuting is Brendan Blackburn, who comes in at No. 4 at 285 pounds. He won his weight class at Bonner Springs as well. Winfield senior Josh Horn is ranked No. 1.

Colby is the top team in the rankings followed by Bonner Springs, Andale, Goodland, Chanute, Fort Scott, Buhler, Lindsborg-Smoky Valley, Holton and Concordia.
