Uniontown junior high girls continue making progress

Friday, December 21, 2012

Uniontown's junior high girls' basketball team continues to make progress as the eighth-grade squad heads into the holiday break.

Coach Paula Coyan's team has been busy in 2012. The team opened with a decisive victory over Pleasanton before getting nipped by Jayhawk-Linn 24-23.

The team edged Moran 20-16, before falling to Jayhawk-Linn in a rematch, then tumbling to Oswego and Arma.

The Eagles just missed against Crest in a 32-26 setback and against Westphalia 26-21, before dropping another game to Arma.

Victories over Pleasanton by scores of 35-17 and Moran 30-26, respectively, followed.

"This is a great group of girls," noted Coyan. "They work hard. We may not have a lot of height, but we do handle the ball well, even against pressure."

Post/wing Holly Shinn has provided the scoring leadership while point guard Shalina Harper runs the team.

"They've been our most consistent and they are our two main leaders."

They get help from wing Lorenza Burris, wing Krystal Lord, post Morgan Freeman, wing Daryan Herring, post Haley Ruggles, and wing Tamia Johnson. Ruggles, at about 5-10, is the tallest on the squad.

"Most of the girls have played since fourth grade," the coach said.

"Our goal is just to keep working on the fundamentals on both sides of the ball and get the girls ready for high school. That's a big jump, from junior high, and we want to do everything we can to prepare them," Coyan said.

The team returns to action on the road Jan. 7 with a rematch with Jayhawk-Linn.

The remainder of the schedule includes:

Jan. 10 vs. Crest

Jan. 14 vs. Westphalia

Jan. 24 vs. Pleasanton

Jan. 28 vs. Oswego
