Cavaliers sweep Greyhounds in KJCCC play

Thursday, December 13, 2012

OVERLAND PARK -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams were swept by host Johnson County here Tuesday night in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

Fort Scott's women fell to the then-No. 1-ranked Cavaliers, 80-39. Greyhound men lost to the Cavaliers, 69-54. Once 5-2, Fort Scott has lost four of its last five.

Although Johnson County's women won, they fell from the top spot in the NJCAA Division II poll this week following a home loss to then-No. 10 Highland on Saturday. In the new poll released Wednesday afternoon, Highland moved up to No. 4 while Johnson dropped to No. 5.

Fort Scott, Johnson County and Highland -- three of the division's four Division II teams -- are tied atop the Eastern Division men's standings as all three are 1-1 in conference play. They are the only three schools which have played conference games. Highland plays at Kansas City, the other D-II team, Saturday.

These games also counted toward seeding for the post-season Region VI Division II Tournament.

Johnson County women 80, Fort Scott 39.

Johnson County (1-1 East, 3-1 D-II, 11-1 overall) led 34-19 at halftime on the way to its victory. The Cavs held Fort Scott (0-2, 0-4, 3-8) to 28-percent field-goal shooting on 15 of 54 and outrebounded the 'Hounds, 50-34.

D'Shawna Lee led Fort Scott with 13 points and Erika McKenzie added 11. Lee also had 10 rebounds while Burgandie Lewis grabbed 11 caroms.

Four players reached double figures for Johnson County. Kathleen Brisbane led with way with 17 points as she connected on 8 of 12 shots from the field. Dashawn Harden added 13 points, Kariel Hutt 11 and Sameia Kendall 10.

Johnson County shot 44 percent from the field on 30 of 68. The Cavs committed only 12 turnovers to Fort Scott's 21.

Greyhound women play their final game of the first semester tonight at 6 p.m. against Cottey College at Arnold Arena. They'll be looking to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Johnson County men 69, Fort Scott 54.

James Fleming made 10 of 17 shots from the field for Fort Scott (1-1, 2-2, 6-6), including 5 of 9 three-point attempts, to lead the offense with 26 points. But no other Greyhound scored more than eight.

Christian Hildebrandt, who made 6 of his 13 field-goal attempts, and Tony Jones scored 19 points each for Johnson County (1-1, 2-2, 5-7) and JaRon Rollins added 18 on 7-of-11 field-goal shooting, going 4-for-6 from three-point range. Jones also hauled down 15 rebounds for the Cavs.

Fort Scott led 30-28 at halftime. Johnson outscored the 'Hounds 41-24 in the second half.

FSCC finished the game 20 of 55 from the field. The 'Hounds shot 52 percent in the first half (12 of 23) but only 25 percent (8 of 32) in the second. The Cavaliers shot 35 percent in the first half on 10 of 29 and 58 percent in the second on 15 of 26.

Fort Scott outrebounded Johnson County 36-34. Ray Ray Chase grabbed 10 boards for the 'Hounds.
