Mary Jane (Connie) Crain, 86, of Fort Scott died Tuesday morning, Nov. 27, 2012 at her home. She was born April 8, 1926, in Pittsburg, Kan., the daughter of Chester Francis and Ruth Mary (Jones) Connet. She married Donald William Crain April 11, 1953, in Pittsburg, Kan.

Connie was raised in McAlester, Okla., where she graduated from McAlester High School in 1944. She attended Lindenwood, the University of Oklahoma, and Baker University from which she graduated in 1948 with a degree in vocal music. Prior to her marriage to Don, Connie taught school in Kansas and Oklahoma and then later taught for many years at Winfield Scott Elementary in Fort Scott.

Connie was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and was involved in church music for 55 years. She was also a longtime member of the PEO Sisterhood and Beta Sigma Phi.

Connie is survived by her children, Karen C. Crain of Tulsa, Okla., and John C. Crain of Fort Scott, Kan.; and a granddaughter, Courtney Meghan Crain. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Don.

Following cremation, Rev. Robert Crain, assisted by Rev. Jared Witt, will conduct memorial services for Connie at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at a reception in the church parlor following the services.

Private committal services will be held later in the day at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Courtney Meghan Crain college fund established by Donald Crain on the birth of his granddaughter.
