'Hound men win third straight, 87-77

HESSTON -- Fort Scott Community College's men have won three games in a row for the first time since November of 2007. Victory No. 3 in the current streak came Tuesday night at Hesston as the Greyhounds won their first Region VI Division II contest, 87-77, over Hesston.

The 'Hounds (1-0 Region, 3-2 overall) last won three straight from on Nov. 14, 15 and 27, 2007 when they beat the junior varsity teams from MidAmerica Nazarene University, Ottawa University and Benedictine College.

Sophomore Austin Danner led the Greyhounds off the bench with 28 points. Fort Scott High product Gary Floyd added 14 points and Prince Samuels chipped in with 12.

The 'Hounds shot 58 percent from the floor, making 34 of 59 field-goal attempts. Hesston shot 39 percent on 29 of 75.

Fort Scott led 19-11 seven minutes into the game after Danner scored on consecutive baskets in transition. But Hesston (0-1, 4-2) scored eight in a row to tie it with 10 1/2 minutes left in the half.

The 'Hounds scored 15 of 17 to make it 36-23 with less than six minutes left. They led 43-34 at the half.

The Larks scored 6 of the first 8 in the second half to get within 45-41 with 17:27 left. Fort Scott connected on 5 of its next 6 shots to push the margin to 56-46.

Hesston got within 73-68 with about 3 1/2 minutes left But Danner scored 6 straight points to boost the lead to 11.

A pair of Danner free throws made it 83-69 with 1:21 remaining.

The Larks might have been able to keep it closer had their free-throw shooting not deserted them in the second half. They made 8 of 12 charity tossed in the first half but only 3 of 15 in the second.

Alex Santiago led Hesston with 20 points. Tra Smoot added 17, Pierre Zook 13 and Mahlon Jones 11.

Fort Scott hosts Wentworth Military Saturday at 2 p.m. in Arnold Arena.
