FORT SCOTT -- During a special board meeting, Friday, USD 234 selected a familiar name in Susan Brown as its new business manager/board clerk, to replace Tiffany Forester, who will leave at semester's end to work as board treasurer at Northeast USD 246, Arma.

Brown, who currently serves as assistant city manager and director of finance for the city of Fort Scott, was chosen from 14 applicants after the field had been narrowed to four people for interviews.

Brown returns to USD after having worked for the city of Fort Scott since September 2005, when she became finance director. In August 2010, Brown added the newly-created assistant city manager position to her title.

As the director of finance, Brown oversees the city's utility office, accounts payable clerk, accounts receivable clerk, monitors the city's budget and financial situations, administers all the grants, handles the city's insurance and worker's compensation claims and handles claims against the city.

"Susan has the qualifications and experience to do the job in a manner that assists the school district's movement toward meeting its goals," Superintendent Dr. Diane Gross wrote in her recommendation to the board. "She will undoubtedly contribute to the USD 234 leadership team."

Brown's tentative start date at USD 234 is Dec. 3, contingent on her commitments with the city.

Brown, who previously worked at USD 234 as a secretary at Fort Scott Middle School, starting in 1998, worked her way up to the district's central office as an accounts payable clerk.

Brown received her degree in business administration from Missouri Southern State University in 2005 and began work with Certified Public Accountant Tim Heiser to further her knowledge of accounting before accepting her post with the city. Brown also attended Fort Scott Community College from 1993 to 1995.

Brown, who is currently on medical leave, could not be reached for comments on Friday.
