Hubert, as he was known to all his friends and family, was born on March 18, 1932, in Eve, Mo., to Wilbur and Hattie (Francis) Leonard. Raised in the Deerfield, Mo., area, Hubert graduated from Nevada High School in 1950. On June 14, 1953, he married Mildred Louise Boyle of Fort Scott, Kan. They lived their entire married life in the Fort Scott area. To this union was born a daughter, Marilyn Kay (Leonard) Hohulin.
Hubert worked as a mechanic for Gorman International until 1964 when he went to work for what was then The Western Insurance Co. and would later become American States Insurance. He rose to the position of territory manager and retired in 1995. In addition, Hubert enjoyed farming and grew and maintained a herd of registered South Devon cattle with his brother, Larry. Hubert was actively involved in his grandsons' lives and, together with Mildred, attended their many baseball games, football games, school plays, band concerts and a multitude of other events. One of his greatest joys was helping them work on their old classic cars and then going riding with them.
Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Albert Leonard, and three sisters, Mary Leonard, Nadine Wurtz, and Juanita Monroe. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred Leonard of Fort Scott; daughter Marilyn and son-in-law Bubs Hohulin of Lamar, Mo., and two grandsons, Bill Hohulin of Rolla, Mo., and Steven Hohulin, of Springfield, Mo. In addition, he is survived by five sisters; Wanda Leonard and Linda Defebaugh, both of Fort Scott, Kan., Frances Brown of Leavenworth, Kan., Dorothy Jean Wild of Broken Arrow, Okla., Bernice Calame of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Edwin Leonard of Mesa, Ariz., and Larry Leonard of Owasso, Okla., as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him dearly.
Pastor Tim O'Neal will conduct funeral services for Hubert at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the Community Christian Church with burial following at the Memory Gardens of Bourbon County Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. The visitation will be Sunday evening, Oct. 21, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
