Eichhorn

Boyd Eugene "B. E." Eichhorn II was born Feb. 19, 1963, in Oswego Hospital, Oswego, Kan., to Parents Boyd and Donna (Gilbreath) Eichhorn. He died Oct. 9, 2012, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., after suffering a heart attack. B.E. grew up on the family farm east of Altamont, Kan., and attended school in the 506 District. He graduated from Labette County High School in 1981.

Although he never practiced the profession, B.E. attended auctioneer school and was a licensed auctioneer. He was known for his skills and talent as a self-taught silversmith, producing thousands of bits, spurs, buckles and conchos.

He was a member of Zion Hill Community Church, American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association and the National Cutting Horse Association.

B.E. was a soft-spoken, kind, loyal, humble, faithful and generous person. He has donated bits, spurs, buckles, and more, too numerous to mention as awards in many rodeos, ranch rodeos, youth rodeos, as well as silent benefit auctions.

His bits can be found all across the United States and can be found in the mouths of horses in the movies, and in multiple televised horse events. B.E. especially liked children and always wanted young cowboys and cowgirls to have the best bits, spurs, and buckles available, inscribed on the back with his simple carved initials of B.E. He was known on many occasions to give away the buckle right off the belt in the loop of the Wranglers he was wearing. His last act of generosity was demonstrated by the fact that he was an organ donor. His wish to save the lives of others was honored. B.E. never preached from a pulpit, but his life was a sermon to be emulated. He will be missed greatly.

B.E. is survived by his mother, Donna Eichhorn, Bartlett, Kan., one sister, Beth Conrad and husband Delbert, Bartlett, Kan., two brothers; Brent Eichhorn of Pratt, Kan., and Ben Eichhorn and wife, Jennifer of Bartlett, Kan. He is also survived two nephews, Stetson Barney, Stillwater, Okla., Brody Eichhorn, Bartlett, Kan.; three nieces Samantha Barney, Weatherford, Okla., Emily Eichhorn, Bartlett, Kan., and Kaytelin Eichhorn, Miami, Okla. He was preceded in death by his father Boyd Eichhorn. Of great importance to B.E. were the many friends that he has left behind.

Pastor Charlie Kaupke will conduct funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery at Fort Scott, Kan. Visitation will be held on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the B.E. Eichhorn Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kan., 66701.
