Stark, Robertson advance to 4A State Golf

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

GIRARD -- Fort Scott High School senior Karley Stark and junior Morgan Robertson will play in next Monday's Class 4A State Golf Tournament after qualifying as at-large participants.

Stark and Robertson were two of the top five best individuals from schools which did not qualify the entire team out of Monday's Girard Class 4A Regional Tournament. As a team, Fort Scott shot 521, its highest 18-hole score of the year, and finished fifth.

"What a terrible time for everyone on the team to have nearly their worst day of golf," Fort Scott Head Coach Karen Curran said. "Really disappointed that we didn't pull it together after having some really good practice days last week. I know they gave their best effort today ... and they were certainly not the only ones that struggled posting good scores. Most scores were significantly higher than what they had been shooting all season. Not sure if it was the change in temperature, the pressure of it being Regionals, markers in the groups, the lightning-fast greens...or if it was a little of everything."

Robertson tied for 13th place with Girard's Trinadie Puckett after both shot identical scores of 62 on the front nine, 61 on the back for a total of 123. Stark finished 16th at 67-59--126.

To give you an idea of how much higher the scores were this year, Stark finished last year's Regional with a score of 114 and missed out on going to State by 13 strokes.

"I'm still extremely happy that Morgan and Karley played well enough to qualify as individuals and continue their season at the state tournament," Curran said. "Karley's worked for four years to attain that goal and I'm so glad that she finally reached it. It's also great that Morgan qualified as a junior and still has another shot at it next year."

Girard won the team title at 419 and Labette County's first-year squad shot 463 to beat out Chanute for the second team-qualifying spot by 2 strokes.

Girard's Timbrelee McNair won the individual crown with a 41-43--84. Teammate Carly Heatherly was the only other golfer under 100 with her 50-47--97.

Also for the Tigers, Laine Parks finished at 64-68--132, Ingrid Diaz at 63-77--140, Natalie Wolf at 74-67--141 and Maggie McDonald at 80-73--153.
