Thursday, October 4, 2012

Uniontown Ruritan Club brought its annual awards meeting to order at the Uniontown High School commons area.

President Randy Rockhold called the meeting to order and welcomed guests. The club provided fried chicken; tea was provided by Skeet George and members brought salads and desserts.

Rockhold presented the outstanding teacher award to Dustin Miller, a fifth-grade teacher at West Bourbon Elementary School. Dustin was unable to attend because of other responsibilities.

Rockhold explained with great respect the job Dustin is doing and the tremendous contribution he is making to the school and students. He reported that Dustin is very deserving of the award.

Vice President of the FFA Chance Kimrey presented the outstanding agriculturist award to longtime FFA teacher -- 32 years -- Kevin Gleason. Rockhold noted several of Kevin's life priorities as part of the reason he is so deserving of the award.

Gleason presented the outstanding Community Service Award to Carol Jean George, president of the Uniontown Garden Club. Carol named many of the previous projects completed by the club. Members of the club in attendance were asked to receive the award with her. The club was commended by Rockhold for its work in making the community a nicer, more beautiful place to live. The group annually plants and cares for flower boxes at various places throughout Uniontown. Carol Jean also named some of the volunteers who help with the boxes.

Song leader Dale Jackson led club members in singing "America."

Ken Holt gave the invocation and a delicious meal was enjoyed by all.

Skeet George, secretary, read a thank-you card from Ronda Murrow with a check enclosed for the cutting a tree down for her. He also read a thank-you card from the family of Ivan Bolinger. Skeet also mentioned his brother and member Lawrence "Bugs" George wanted to thank the club for their prayers, visits, cards and the fruit basket he received after his recent quadruple heart by-pass surgery.

Rockhold suggested the meeting time be changed as the days get shorter.

Dale Jackson moved that the club have meetings at 7 p.m. during daylight savings time and 6 p.m. during the other months. George Warren seconded and the motion carried. Dan George moved the club have its October meeting at 6 p.m., although it would not yet be daylight savings. Matt Noll seconded and the motion carried.

George reminded the club that it would be hosting the annual Ruritan District meeting this fall (Saturday, Nov. 17) and many club members would be needed to help.

Club members were dismissed with the flag salute and the meeting adjourned.
