Freda Elaine Cowen, 86, of Fort Scott, Kan., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at the Medicalodges Nursing Home, Fort Scott. She was born May 4, 1926, in Laverne, Okla., the daughter of Roy Sylvester and Anna Lula (Thompson) Bentley. She married Glenn Richard Cowen July 31, 1948, in Fort Scott, Kan., and he survives of the home.

Freda was a member of the Fort Scott High School Class of 1945, and following graduation, she worked for Roscoe Campbell at Campbell's Laundry. Later, she worked as a clerk in the claims department at the Western Insurance Company. She and Richard were members of the "Iza Stompers" Square Dance Club and the "Old Forters" Camping Club. Freda was a member of the First Presbyterian Church having served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her husband, Richard, Freda is survived by her children, Wayne Cowen and wife Beverly, Kenton Cowen, Bradley Cowen and wife Joyce, and Larry Cowen and wife Sondra, all of Fort Scott, Kan.; two sisters, Phyllis Ward and husband Harold of Fort Scott, and Jolene Clark of Belton, Mo.; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Jack Bentley and Troy Bentley.

Funeral services for Freda Cowen will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jared Witt officiating. Burial will follow in the Fort Scott National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
