Tiger volleyball fourth at Pittsburg

PITTSBURG -- The Fort Scott High School volleyball team finished fourth at the Pittsburg Tournament here Saturday, winning two of five matches.

Both of Fort Scott's wins came in pool play. The Tigers (6-11) defeated Labette County, 25-18, 31-29, as Ericah Shoemaker had 7 kills and Jillian Lattimer had 5. Maddie Allen handed out 9 assists and Meredith Hill dished 6. Paige Denton was credited with 16 digs.

In the second match of pool play, Paola defeated the Tigers, 25-16, 25-14. Sidney Maycumber had 4 kills and Denton had 14 digs.

The Tigers finished second in pool play with a 25-12, 23-25, 25-23 win over Iola. Shoemaker had 12 kills and Denton 19 kills. Allen handed out 15 assists while Hill recorded 13.

Fort Scott faced host Pittsburg in the semifinal. The Purple Dragons won 25-16, 25-23. Shoemaker had 5 kills and Denton had 13 digs.

The third-place match was a rematch with Paola. The Panthers won 25-8, 25-12. Jillian Lattimer had 4 kills while Denton had 9 digs.

Nevada won the tournament by defeating Pittsburg in two sets in the final. The Dragons had beaten the Tigers in three in pool play.

Fort Scott opens Southeast Kansas League play Thursday night, hosting Coffeyville and Parsons in a triangular at the FSHS gymnasium. The first match is set for a 5 p.m. start.
