She was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Hilla, Mo., the daughter of George C. Smiley and Bertha Payne Smiley. She married Raymond H. Cowan on April 20, 1968, in Nowata, Okla. He preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1998. She was retired as a cook for Fort Scott restaurants.
Survivors include five sons, George Dale Demas, Jackson, Ky., Charles Speer and wife Marian, Carl Junction, Mo., John Speer and wife Pamela, Redfield, Kan., Rev. Mark Demas and wife Dianna, Hamilton, Kan., and Glenn Demas and wife Cecilia, Joplin, Mo.
Also surviving are numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jim Demas; three brothers; one sister, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Rev. Bradley Friesen will conduct graveside services at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until leaving for the cemetery at Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main.
