Jack Steele, age 82, of Osawatomie, Kan., died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the Life Care Center of Osawatomie.

Jack was born June 29, 1930, in Fort Scott, Kan., to Andrew Thomas Steele and Carrie Ruth (Ralls) Steele. He was the oldest of three sons.

He attended Uniontown, Kan., schools and graduated from Uniontown High School in the class of 1948.

After finishing school, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 15, 1948, in Kansas City, Kan.

He served during the Korean War in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from 1948 until his discharge while stationed at Chincoteague, Va., on July 14, 1952. He was an aviation structural mechanic 3rd class.

On Nov. 29, 1949, he and Nadine Lucille Lane married in Fort Scott, Kan., while Jack was still in the Navy. They eventually became the parents of four children. After his discharge, Jack and Nadine lived in Fort Scott and Nevada, Mo., where Jack worked as a Singer sewing machine repairman. Finally they settled in Osawatomie, Kan., in 1955 when Jack started working as a life insurance salesman for the National Life and Accident Insurance Co.

He was a very successful salesman with his career spanning over 30 years. After retirement, Jack worked at Osawatomie Middle School as a custodian for several years.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and his younger brothers, Freddie Steele and Robert Steele.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Nadine of the home, one son: Steven Blaine Steele (Kathy )of Topeka, Kan., three daughters: Cheri Lynn Cowman (Steve) of Paola, Kan., Judith Annette Steele of Gardner, Kan., and Andrea Joy Kierl (John) of Osawatomie, Kan., four grandchildren: Jason Kuder (Jenna) of Olathe, Kan., Justin Kuder (Jared Summers) of Kansas City, Mo., Kurt Cowman (Kelley) of Olathe, Kan., and Christopher Kierl of Osawatomie, Kan., and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Miami County Cancer Foundation.
