Dorothy Elizabeth Carr, 94, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2012, at Guest Home Estates.
Dorothy was born on Jan. 21, 1918, in Fort Scott to Mose Morton and Helen Evelyn Brown Swope.
After graduating from Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Community College, she married Charles Fulton Carr on Aug. 5, 1937.
Dorothy worked in a variety of retail and insurance positions in Fort Scott before opening her own successful business, The Gift Shoppe, on Main Street in the late 1960s.
As a lifelong resident of Fort Scott, Dorothy took pride in her local community. She was ordained an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, was a member of the CA Chapter of P.E.O. and was an accomplished bridge player and golfer.
Above all, she loved to open her home to cook for and entertain her family and many friends.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Harriett Carr Reeves and her husband Stewart of Fort Scott; a sister, Cleo Leterle of Ponca City, Okla.; two brothers, Eldon Swope of Dallas, Texas, and Gerald Swope of Bella Vista, Ark.; two grandchildren, Catherine Carr Reeves and her husband Joe of Denver, Colo., and Hunter Reeves and his wife Tally of Fort Scott; four great-grandchildren, Hannah, Emmah, Hunter and Hollis Reeves and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Charles Fulton Carr, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Mose Morton and Helen Evelyn Brown Swope, and brother, Donald L. Swope.
Memorial services for Dorothy will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012, in Fort Scott at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jared Witt officiating.
The family would appreciate contributions in Dorothy's memory to either the Presbyterian Youth Program or the First Presbyterian Church.
