Willard second in 4A 200 meters

WICHITA -- Fort Scott High School senior Dezmund Willard collected his first State medal in his final high school event here Saturday as he finished second in the finals of the boys' 400-meter dash at the Kansas Class 4A State Track and Field Championships.

Willlard ran 23.40 seconds in qualifying on Friday, which was actually the last time to make it to finals. Saturday, he finished in 22.93 seconds with Lindsborg-Smoky Valley senior Nick Deterding taking the title in 22.79.

Sophomore Katren Rienbolt added a second medal to her weekend tally by finishing fourth in the girls' 1,600-meter run. Rienbolt was fifth in Friday's 3,200-meter run with Colby senior Emilea Finley winning. Finley won Saturday's 1,600 as well, defending her State title in that event, with a time of 5:02.36. Rienbolt finished in 5:25.40 while Fort Scott junior Paige Denton came in 12th in 5:38.04.

With a fourth-place medal picked up by senior Mallory Shelton in Friday's girls' high jump, the Tigers returned home with four this season.

Sophomore Jillian Lattimer finished ninth in girls' javelin Saturday as she had a best mark of 113 feet, 11 inches. The winner was Cheney sophomore Carlea Holt, who went 132 even to finish exactly one foot ahead of Iola senior Kelsey Larson. Holt finished second in the State last year as a freshman.

Senior Brady Fink finished in 13th place in Saturday's triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 4 inches. The winner was defending champion Dallas Natt , an Ottawa junior, at 46' 6 1/4".

Willard and senior Nick Nuzum were unable to advance from Saturday morning's preliminaries in the 100-meter dash. Nuzum finished seventh in his heat in 11.45 seconds, which was 12th overall, while Willard finished seventh in the opening heat, 14th overall, in 11.49.
