PAOLA -- Fort Scott High School's softball team routed Prairie View, 11-1, in the semifinal of the Paola Class 4A Regional Tournament here Tuesday. But the third-seeded Tigers fell to top-seeded Paola, 15-0, in the championship game.
The Panthers (22-1) outscored their three Regional opponents, Osawatomie, Louisburg and Fort Scott, 43-0. They advance to the Class 4A State Tournament at Salina May 25-26.
The third-seeded Tigers broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning of the semifinal. They scored 3 runs in that inning and added one in the fourth and 5 in the fifth. Riley Brown went 4 for 4 at the plate and drove in 6 runs. Hannah Tourtillott drove in 2 runs. Sidney Maycumber, Delane Gray, Mackenzie Jackman and Maddi Allen each had 2 hits.
Freshman pitcher Kyenne Wade made her first varsity start, giving up just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9.
"Kyenne took advantage of her opportunity to play varsity, showing what she can do," Fort Scott head coach Alvin Metcalf said. "Kyenne said she was very relaxed playing with these girls. She dominated each batter she faced. Kyenne has well have a great future in softball."
Brown had the Tigers' only hit in the second game, which was their third loss to the Panthers in as many meetings this season. Paola swept a home doubleheader from Fort Scott on April 26.
"Paola has been hot all tournament hitting lights out against everyone they face," Metcalf said. "And their defense was outstanding. Paola continued hitting the ball into gaps and just seemed they did everything right. They will be tough to beat at state if they continue to play like they did at Regionals."
Fort Scott's season ended with a record of 13-8, winning 5 of its last 6 games.
