Fort Scott softball advances past Fillies

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

PAOLA -- Fort Scott High School's softball team moved past sixth-seeded Iola, 12-8, Monday in the first round of the Paola Class 4A Regional Softball Tournament.

The Tigers (12-7) advanced to a Tuesday semifinal with No. 2 seed Prairie View (15-4), which bounced Anderson County, 14-4. Top-seed Paola (20-1) routed Osawatomie, 20-0, and No. 4 Louisburg (8-13) beat Ottawa, 9-4.

Paola and Louisburg faced each other Tuesday in the other semifinal. The championship game concluded Tuesday play with that winner going on to the Class 4A State Tournament at Salina, May 25-26.

The Tigers took control with 5 runs in the fourth inning and 5 more in the fifth to go up 12-3. Iola (4-16) scored 5 runs over its last 2 innings -- 4 of those in the seventh.

"Delane Gray pitched pretty good for the first six innings," Fort Scott head coach Alvin Metcalf said. " Delane's pitches in the seventh came up a little higher in the strike zone .... but she never quit and pushed through and finished a complete game."

Fort Scott also committed 5 errors that Metcalf felt gave the Fillies 4 runs. But the Tigers also turned their fifth double play of the season and catcher Mackenzie Jackman threw out her 22nd runner this season.

Jackman also hit her third home run of the season as she went 2 for 2 at the plate and drove in 5 runs. Her other hit was a double. She is now 17 for 31 (.548) in her last 10 games.

Hannah Tourtillott and Shelby Maycumber each went 3 for 4. Gray was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Maddi Allen was 2 for 2. Riley Brown drove in 4 runs, 3 of them on a triple. Ericah Shoemaker went 2 for 3.

Gray (5-4) allowed 4 earned runs on 10 hits. She walked 2 and struck out 4.
