Longer days in store for county public works staff

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

The work day just got a little longer for county public works employees, Bourbon County officials announced on Monday.

Public works employees will start working at 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday and stop at 5:30 p.m. beginning Monday, May 14 until Sept. 14. Right now, employees work eight hours a day, five days a week.

Bourbon County Public Works Supervisor Marty Pearson said the purpose of the hour revision is to "get more work done and have less travel."

"We're trying to cut down on fuel and get a little more work done during the day," Pearson said.

The Bourbon County Commission approved extending the length of the work day for road and bridge employees during Monday's meeting.

While about 31 county workers will be affected by the change, employees with the Bourbon County Landfill will continue working the current schedule.

Any week with a holiday will revert back to the current, five-day-a-week schedule.

In other business from this and previous meetings commissioners:

* Approved re-bidding the landfill hay for a three-year term on Friday.

Previously, the county received no bids for the hay when they were opened April 16. Bids for this new round will be opened at 10 a.m. May 21.

* Approved re-appointing commissioner Jingles Edincott to represent the commission on the Bourbon County Economic Development Council on Friday.

* Bourbon County Attorney Terri Johnson told commissioners on April 23 that she has been unable to find any statutory authority for commissioners to waive the 30 percent food sales requirement to sell liquor by the drink in the county, according to commission minutes. Johnson said the waiver requires a public vote, such as the one in 1992 that originally passed the requirement.

On April 20, Becky Mann approached commissioners requesting they waive the 30 percent requirement for her and her husband's banquet facilities business, River Room Events LLC.
