Wednesday, April 18, 2012

OSWEGO -- Jayhawk-Linn won the Oswego Invitational here Monday while Uniontown's golfers struggled as they finished sixth in the 10-school field.

Each one of Jayhawk-Linn's entrants placed in the top 20. Uniontown's highest finisher was Seth Sympson in 23rd place.

"Our kids didn't play well for some reason," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said. "Shots they would normally hit in practice were not happening on the course."

Rece Dawson of Jayhawk-Linn was the individual champion with his score of 77. Hunter Midfelt of Erie took second at 79 followed by Jayhawk's Jadon Proffitt at 82. The highest-scoring medalist shot 89.

Austin Earl tied for 11th with a 90 for J-Linn while Wes Leach tied for 14th with a 93, Pat Sutherland tied for 16th with a 96 and Trent Vaughn finished 20th at 100.

Jayhawk-Linn and Erie both shot 342. Each team's fifth golfer shot the same score. Vaughn's 100 gave the Jayhawks the title as Erie did not have a sixth golfer.

Fredonia was a distant third at 357. Uniontown finished with a 449 for sixth place.

Sympson shot 104 in finishing 23rd out of 46 golfers. Chance Hoener was next at 106 for 24th. Brenden Wood finished with a 112, Zach Travis with a 127 and Drew George at 133.

Jayhawk-Linn hosts its annual invitational Monday at Sugar Valley Golf Course south of Mound City. Uniontown will also be in attendance. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
