Eagles need just 8 innings for sweep

UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's softball team was scheduled to play a Three Rivers League doubleheader against Northeast here Monday. But by the time things were said and done, the Eagles barely played the equivalent of one full game.

Uniontown (4-0 TRL, 5-1 overall) needed just eight innings to sweep Northeast, winning game one in five 12-2 and taking the second game in three, 17-2. In both games, the run rule -- 10 after five innings or 15 after three -- kicked in while the Eagles were batting, so offensively, they scored 29 runs in a little less than eight full innings.

"We hit the ball well today, were aggressive on the base paths and scored when we got on base," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "Our pitchers, Taylor (Wade) and Mandie (Ridge) threw the ball well. Both of them reduced the number of walks from previous games. Our defense looked good. All in all, we played the best that we have played all season"

The Eagles scored five runs in the first and fifth innings of the opener while the Vikings managed their only runs in the top of the fourth. Wade (3-0) allowed 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5.

Ridge and Hope Jurgensen each had 3 hits for Uniontown while Brittany Stokes and Jamie Dawson each had 2. One of Jurgensen's hits was a triple and Tayler Shook belted a double.

Ridge (2-1) allowed 1 hit, walked 3 and struck out 4 in the second game. The Eagles scored 3 runs in the first inning, 8 in the second and 6 in the third.

Ridge, Torrie Hathaway and Jamie Dawson had 2 hits each in game two. Both of Dawson's were doubles.

In the doubleheader, Uniontown bashed out 27 hits and stole 21 bases. Just 5 Eagles were left on base the entire day.

Uniontown continues league play Monday with a doubleheader at Oswego. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
