Tiger track teams win total of 39 medals

ALTAMONT -- Fort Scott High School's varsity and junior varsity track teams won a combined total of 39 medals at the season-opening event at Labette County here Friday. This is the only time this season the varsity and JV are scheduled to compete on the same day.

The varsity boys finished in second place behind Chanute. The Blue Comets scored 97 points while the Tigers finished with 78. Coffeyville had 67 points for third place.

Fort Scott's varsity girls finished sixth with 53.5 points. Chanute was the winner with 126 points followed by Labette County with 78.

The varsity boys won 12 medals. David Goff won javelin with a throw of 147 feet, 5 inches and Dezmond Willard won the 400-meter dash in 51.75 seconds with Brady Fink in second in 52.07.

There were three other second-place medalists. Fink cleared 41' 4 1/2" in triple jump, Willard ran 22.71 in the 200 and Daniel Durbin went 44' 2" in shot put. Willard was also third in the 100 meters in 11.19 seconds and Nick Nuzum was third in long jump at 18' 11".

Fink took fourth in high jump, clearing 6 feet even, Goff was fourth in shot at 43' 5 1/2" and the 4x400-meter relay team ran a 3:49.79. The final medalist is Cody McGehee, who took fifth in javelin at 138' 2".

Varsity girls had two event winners and 12 medalists. Katren Rienbolt won the 1,600-meter run in 5:35.27 and the 3,200 in 11:58:38, the only runner to break 12 minutes.

Brianne Lawrence finished second in discus with a throw of 91' 1". Jillian Lattimer was third in shot put with a mark of 33' 6" and in javelin with an effort of 110' 5".

Jessica Cox took fourth place in discus at 70' 4". Paige Denton was fifth in the 1,600 in 5:56.59 and the 3,200 in 12:35.79. Lawrence finished fifth shot put at 32' 5".

Mallory Shelton finished sixth in the 400 in 1:07.77 and high jump at 4' 10". Rikki Butler was sixth in the 800 in 2:45.78.

The JV boys claimed 8 medals with Chris Allen winning javelin. Seconds went to Cole Stewart in pole vault, Seth Marshall in javelin, Zack Wheeler in the 800, and Kody Chin-Russell in the 400 and in high jump. Jonathan Stark was sixth in the 100 meters and Allen finished sixth in long jump.

The JV girls earned 7 medals. The highest finish was from the 4x800-meter relay team, which finished second in 13:09.85.

Sissy Thomas finished third in the shot put with a mark of 28' 8 1/2". Francis Torres was fourth in the 800 meters in 3:11.93.

Michaela Webb finished fifth in the 100 meters in 14.50 and the 200 in 30.33. The 4x100 relay team was fifth in 62.97. JoElla Williams took sixth in the 800 in 3:14.70.

The varsity track team will be at Paola Thursday for a meet which begins at 3:30 p.m. The JV team's next outing will be at Chanute Monday.
