Two Fort Scott Community College athletes recently received conference and nationl Player of the Week honors in their respective sports.

Sophomore Jolee Sharp, a graduate of Fort Scott High School, recently received Jayhawk Conference women's basketball POTW honors for the second time this season. She first received the honor the week of February 5.

Last week, Sharp played in three games -- Feb. 20 at Cottey, Feb. 22 vs. Neosho County and Feb. 25 vs. Coffeyville. She scored 49 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, handed out 13 assists and picked up 19 steals while shooting 50 percent from the field. Not only did that performance earn Sharp the Jayhawk Conference award, she was also named the National Junior College Athletic Association's Player of the Week in Division I.

Sharp passed the 800-point mark in her junior-college career against Cottey and has a chance to get to 900 points in her three remaining games -- last night vs. Independence (see box, left), Saturday at Labette and next Wednesday in a first-round Region VI Tournament playoff game, most likely at Hutchinson.

Right-handed pitcher Brett Swain, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., was named the KJCCC Pitcher of the Week and NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week for his performance in a Sunday victory over Muscatine, Iowa. In that game, Swain faced two batters over the minimum and allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six. The Greyhounds won that game 6-0 as part of a sweep of a four-game series with Muscatine.

The Greyhound baseball team (12-1) begins Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play with a four-game series at Allen this weekend. Doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday on the field on the Allen campus in Iola. FSCC swept the Evangel junior varsity Wednesday at Springfield, Mo.
