Grizzlies rebuff Tigers' claim to share of SEK championship

Friday, February 24, 2012

Labette County's boys made it their kind of game at the FSHS gymnasium Thursday night, robbing Fort Scott High of momentum and cranking out a 60-55 victory that denied the Tigers a share of the Southeast Kansas League championship.

Parsons and Independence won their games Thursday night and finished as SEK co-champions. Parsons (7-1 SEK, 18-2 overall) claimed its share of its league-record 30th title with an 80-64 victory over Coffeyville. Independence (7-1, 14-6) claimed its share with a 45-25 rout of Iola.

The Tigers (6-2, 15-5) held a 15-6 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter. But Labette County managed to slow the pace and scored 11 of the last 14 of the period.

Tyler Adams hit a 25-foot shot at the horn to put the Tigers up 36-32 at the half. LCHS (4-4, 9-11) scored the first 10 of the fourth to go up 55-47.

Adams finished with 24 points for Fort Scott. Kyle Altic added 13.
