Fort Scott Community College's women were looking to get a key victory for purposes of Region VI Tournament seeding Wednesday night when Neosho County came to Arnold Arena for a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division contest. Instead, despite their effort to rally, they dropped a 55-46 decision to the Panthers that puts them two games out of the No. 7 seed in the win column.

The team that finishes with the No. 8 seed is going to have to travel to Hutchinson for its first-round tournament game. The Blue Dragons, ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA Division I poll, are undefeated after 26 games. The No. 7 seed, while still having a long trip, would be on the road at Seward County, Cloud County or maybe Garden City if things shake out properly. Seward has five losses, Cloud seven and Garden 11.

Scoring came with great deal of difficulty for both teams in the first half. The 'Hounds (2-13 East, 8-19 overall) scored the first 5 points but Neosho County (4-11, 5-22) scored the next eight. But that took eight minutes to accomplish.

Erica Smith put Fort Scott ahead 9-8 with 8:51 to go in the half. But Neosho scored 9 of the next 11.

The Panthers led 21-17 at the half and tried to pull away in the second half, going up 40-29 with 3:49 to go.

The 'Hounds began to catch up at the free-throw line and got within 42-37 with 1:03 to go. Then in order to preserve as much time as possible, Fort Scott began fouling even before the ball was inbounded. At one point, there were 7 fouls called in four seconds of playing time.

Jolee Sharp scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half for the 'Hounds while Jataeva Arnold scored 9 of her 13 at the free-throw line. Autumn Zenon led Neosho County with 16 points.

Arnold grabbed 12 rebounds while Kate Atherton hauled down 11.

In Monday's game at Cottey, Brittany Pearl made five 3-point shots as she finished with 21 points. Arnold chipped in with 15 and Sharp added 12.

Coffeyville will visit Arnold Arena for the Greyhounds' home finale Saturday at 2 p.m.
