No. 4 Highland holds off FSCC women; 'Hound men fall by 34

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

HIGHLAND -- Fort Scott Community College's women gave Highland, the fourth-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, all it could ask for here Saturday afternoon before falling to the Scotties, 53-47, in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

Fort Scott's men trailed 43-27 at the half and saw Highland go up by as much as 40 in the second half. The Scotties settled for an 89-55 victory.

Brittany Pearl led Fort Scott's women with 16 points and the Greyhounds (2-12 East, 7-18 overall) were able to lead 31-27 at the half.

Kathryn Thomas and Janelle Saling picked up the Scotties (12-2, 24-2) in the second half. Highland outscored Fort Scott 26-16 in the second 20 minutes.

Thomas finished with 26 points for Highland -- whose only losses are to Johnson County, ranked No. 1 in Division II and currently leading the Jayhawk East. Saling added 15 points.

Fort Scott will host a crucial game against Neosho County Wednesday night at Arnold Arena. The Panthers (3-11, 4-22) broke a tie for ninth place in the divison standings when they beat seventh-place Kansas City Saturday night, 55-52. A Greyhound victory would put the teams back in a tie and also give Fort Scott a sweep of the season series, which would work as a tie-breaker for post-season tournament seeding. The Greyhounds defeated the Panthers 45-27 at Chanute on January 21.

Fort Scott's men fell to 1-13 in the division and 2-24 overall. They are five games out of the No. 7 seed with four remaining and are locked into the No. 8 seed from the East when the Region VI Tournment begins in March. However, the 'Hounds could be going to one of five different places for that first-round game as the top five teams in the Western Division are within 2 1/2 games of each other.

Highland improved to 7-7, 14-12. No other details were available from the men's game.

The men also play Neosho County Wednesday night. The Jayhawk Confernce doubleheader will tip off with the women's game at 5:30 and the men to follow at 7:30.
