Greyhounds swept at Cowley

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

ARKANSAS CITY -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams were swept by Cowley in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play at W.S. Scott Auditorium Saturday night, a place that's difficult on visitors under normal circumstances.

Cowley defeated Fort Scott's women 90-37 in the first game of the doubleheader but that didn't keep the KJCCC -- headquartered in Arkansas City, incidentally -- from naming sophomore guard Jolee Sharp its Player of the Week.

The men, who dressed six players, were beaten by the Tigers, 89-43.

Cowley women 90, Fort Scott 37.

Cowley (7-3 East, 16-6 overall) led 45-24 at the half. As the game got further out of hand, coach Diana Couch pulled three of her starters for the final five minutes but Cowley continued to keep on with a full-court press.

The Greyhounds (2-8, 7-14) were within five points before the Tigers went on an early run.

Sharp, a Fort Scott High School graduate, scored 13 points, dished 4 assists and picked up 7 steals for the 'Hounds. Earlier in the week in a victory over Labette, Sharp had a career-high 34 points. That gave her 47 points for the week on 11-of-21 field-goal shooting. She made 20 of 22 free throws during the week, dished 10 assists and picked up 11 steals in 70 minutes of playing time.

Sharp is fifth in the conference in scoring (16.3 points per game), fifth in field-goal percentage (52.6 percent on 110 of 209), and first in steals (4.71 per game, nearly 1 per game more than second-place Miracle Davis of Allen).

Cowley men 89, Fort Scott 43.

Fort Scott High graduate Cody Harper dressed out and played his first game, scoring a 3-point field goal as the Greyhounds' active roster grew to six players.

Second-place Cowley (7-3, 17-5) shot 50 percent from the field as the Tigers made 36 of 72 field-goal attempts. Nine of the makes were 3-pointers. Fort Scott (1-9, 2-20) was held to 23-percent shooting on 12 of 52.

Cowley outrebounded Fort Scott 51-30. Julian Mills led the 'Hounds with 7 boards.

Teance Walton led Fort Scott with 17 points. Curtis Evans scored 20 for Cowley followed by Kamren Belin with 14 and Zach Nelson with 13.

Fort Scott's teams will play at Allen Wednesday night. Tip off for the women's game is at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8. KSEK-FM (99.1) will broadcast this doubleheader and Saturday's pair against Johnson County.

NOTES -- Coffeyville's men, ranked second in the NJCAA Division I poll, was beaten by rival Independence Saturday night, 86-76. By coincidence, the Red Ravens' only other loss of the season was also a 10-point decision, 78-68 to Cloud County in the semifinal of the Coffeyville Juco Elite Eight Tournament in December.

And just to show that one always tosses the records out the window when rivals play, Independence is still only in tied for third place in the East at 6-4, 11-11. Coffeyville fell to 9-1, 20-2 but is still two games ahead of Cowley....

Johnson County's women, ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II, bounced Highland 88-44 Saturday at Overland Park. The Scotties came into the game ranked fourth in Division II.

The win gives Johnson (10-0, 21-1) a season sweep over Highland, which it also beat 68-51 at Highland on Jan. 4. The Scotties fell to 8-2, 20-2) and into a tie for second in the East with Independence (18-3) overall, which is the top Division I team in the East. Independence's only loses are to Johnson County, Highland and Barton....
