Wednesday, February 1, 2012

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott High's boys bounced back from maybe their worst performance of the season Friday night at Independence to have perhaps their best performance of the year here Friday night. The Tigers never trailed and shot 55 percent from the floor in a 77-68 victory over Coffeyville in Southeast Kansas League play.

After scoring a season-low 37 points in a 17-point setback at Indy, the Tigers (1-1 SEK, 10-4 overall) bettered that by 40 points and produced their second-highest total of the season.

The Golden Tornado (1-1, 10-4) tied the score five times in the first quarter, the last at 15-15, but were never able to get that go-ahead basket. Tiger sophomore Jash Pytlowany sparked a 9-1 run to end the first quarter with a 3-point basket with around 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Fort Scott took a 24-16 lead into the second period.

The Nado got back within two points, 28-26, when James Newton took a steal in for a dunk with around four minutes to go. But the Tigers scored 9 of the next 11 and eventually went into the locker room with a 38-30 advantage.

Fort Scott bumped the lead to 12 at the start of the second half as Tyler Adams and Kyle Altic, going despite his sore back, scored the first two baskets. Woodring made it 12 again when he hit a 3-point shot to make it 47-35.

Coffeyville got within 60-55 with under six minutes left after a 6-0 run.

Daniel Durbin and Adams scored back-to-back baskets that put the Tigers up 68-56 with 3 1/2 minutes left. The Nado got within 6 three times, the last when Newton scored with 34 seconds left to bring his team within 72-66.

At that point, Coffeyville had to start fouling and the Tigers made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds.
