Saturday, January 21, 2012

BASEHOR, Kan. -- Fort Scott High's boys never trailed -- although the score was tied about halfway through the third period -- in the fifth-place game of the Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Invitational here Friday night, taking a 62-53 victory over Maryville, Mo.

The Spoofhounds did manage a 40-40 tie after going on a 10-2 run in the third period. But the Tigers (9-3) outscored Maryville 22-13 the rest of the way.

Fort Scott held an 8-2 lead after three minutes of play and went into the second leading 20-14. Matt Wright sparked a late-second quarter run that pushed the lead to 32-22 with 2:29 left in the half.

The Tigers led 34-28 at the half. Maryville's Johnathan Baker hit a pair of 3-point shots during the Spoofhounds' mid-period run.

Cameron Woodring broke Maryville's streak with a 3-point shot with exactly two minutes to go. Jash Pytlowany followed with a jumper for the Tigers. Baker brought Maryville back within two with a layup just as the quarter ended.

Woodring hit a 2-point jumper and a 3-point shot back-to-back to extend Fort Scott's lead to 55-47. The Spoofhounds had to start fouling just to get the Tigers into the one-and-one. After three fouls, Woodring was sent to the line. He made the first free throw, and then missed the second. However, Brady Fink was in position to put back the miss for his only points of the night with 1:12 to go. That play made it 58-49.
