Saturday, January 21, 2012

BASEHOR, Kan. -- Fort Scott High's girls played one of their best defensive games of the season in the seventh-place game of the Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Invitational Friday afternoon. But the Tiger offense wasn't able to keep up the pace it needed to take a lead and Pembroke Hill (Mo.) held on for a 36-29 victory.

The Raiders led 20-8 after one period of play, making 8 of 13 shots from the field. The Tigers (3-9) held Pembroke Hill to 2-of-17 field-goal shooting the rest of the game.

The four 3-point goals Pembroke made in the first quarter and a 9-of-14 performance at the free-throw line in the fourth were enough to give the Raiders the win.

Fort Scott got a boost from Jillian Lattimer off the bench as the sophomore post scored 6 of her team-leading 10 points consecutively to bring the Tigers within 20-17 with about two minutes to go in the first half. Megan Favor scored the Raiders' only point of the second quarter on a free throw with 1:54 to go.

Mallory Shelton scored the first basket of the third period and Katren Rienbolt tied the score at 21-21 with 5:50 on the clock. But the Tigers were outscored 4-1 the rest of the quarter.

The Raiders held a 31-24 lead halfway through the fourth period. Lattimer came in again and scored consecutive baskets to bring the Tigers within three with 1:20 to go.

Brianne Lawrence made the first of two free throws with 55 seconds left to cut the deficit to 31-29. She missed the second and Pembroke got the rebound. Erica Hunt made two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 26 seconds remaining.

Hunt led the Raiders with 16 points, going 8 for 8 at the free-throw line. Erin Harvey added 10 points.

Pembroke Hill made 10 of 30 shots from the field overall. The Raiders also made 12 of 24 free throws and outrebounded the Tigers 29-22.

Fort Scott was 12 of 33 from the field but didn't make a 3-point shot and was just 5 of 12 at the charity stripe.

The Tigers will begin Southeast Kansas League play Friday night at Independence, Kan.
