Mary Jane Ayers, 76, resident of Fort Scott, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at the Mercy Health Center.

She was born April 19, 1935, in Pittsburg, Kan., the daughter of Frank Leslie McVickers and Blanche Alice Keplinger McVickers.

She married James Walter Lance in 1955. They later divorced. She married Raymond Edward Ayers in June of 1966 in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1995.

Mary was self-employed in her catering business having baked wedding and birthday cakes for over 30 years.

She was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years.

Survivors include one son, Rick Lance and wife Connie, Greeley, Colo.; three daughters, Susan Jane Hixon and husband Fred, Diane Kay Clay and husband Charles, all of Fort Scott, and Ellen Louise Lauber and husband Mike, Joplin, Mo.

Also surviving is a brother, Robert McVickers, Pittsburg; five grandchildren, Jennifer Clark, Jill Hensley, Kayla Ledford, Andrew McGee and Sara Lance; and four great-grandchildren.

Rev. Paul Rooks and Rev. A.F. Collins will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. Burial will follow in U.S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
