Greyhound teams show fight despite sweep

Thursday, January 12, 2012

OVERLAND PARK -- Al-though they were swept in a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader here Wednesday night, both Fort Scott Community College basketball teams showed fight against Johnson County in the second half.

Greyhound women fell to the Cavaliers -- ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II poll -- by a 49-40 score but they outscored Johnson 15-3 in the last 5 1/2 minutes of play.

Fort Scott's men rallied from 11 points down in the second half to get within three with 1:24 remaining. But Chris Brasher hit a 3-point shot moments later as Johnson County scored 7 of the game's final 9 points and went on to a 58-50 victory.

Both Greyhound teams play at Kansas City Kansas Saturday afternoon. The women square off at 2 p.m. while the men face off at 4 p.m.

The lead grew to 39-17 with 14 minutes left after the Cavs scored 12 of the first 16 of the second half.

Jolee Sharp, who came off the bench in this game, sparked Fort Scott's late run by scoring the first 6 points, which were also her first points of the contest. Burgandie Lewis' 3-point shot with just under a minute left brought the 'Hounds within 49-38.
