Three win brackets at Bonner Springs invite

BONNER SPRINGS -- Jacob Durossette, Victor Hughes and Dane Cummings won the championships of their respective brackets at the Bonner Springs Dick Burns Mat Classic here Saturday.

As a team, the Tigers finished in third place. Blue Valley Southwest won the team title with 199 points. Baldwin, ranked No. 9 in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, was second with 194.5. The Tigers scored 185.5 points to beat out Bonner Springs, which scored 184. The host Braves entered the tournament as the fourth-ranked team in 4A.

Five of the Tigers' other nine wrestlers won medals. Tyler Sharp took second at 120 pounds. Jerad Heckman was third at 126, John Metcalf claimed third at 170 and Christian Tavenaro was third at 182. John Hughes took fourth at 152.

Durossette, ranked No. 2 at 132 pounds in Class 4A, started his day with a pinfall victory over Adam Vanausdall of Shawnee Mission Northwest in the quarterfinals. He defeated Kossivi Esse of Kansas City-Sumner Academy, 19-2, in the semifinals and pinned Andrew Morgan of Baldwin at 2:57 of the championship match.

V.Hughes, ranked No. 2 at 138, pinned Sumner's William Whitworth in the quarters and Baldwin's Cody Sellers in the semis. The took a 3-0 victory over Tyler Harris of Atchison in the final.

Cummings pinned Baldwin's Tiler Garcia and Eudora's Gabe Cleveland, in the quarters and semis at 195. He won a 7-1 decision over Mario Galvan of Shawnee Mission Northwest in the finals.

Sharp pinned Troy Goldenberg of Blue Valley Southwest in the quarterfinals at 120. He claimed a 12-3 decision over Antonio Ferro of Basehor-Linwood in the semifinals. Tucker Clark of Baldwin defeated Sharp, 9-2, in the championship match.

Heckman had to wrestle in to get to the 126-pound quarterfinal, which he did successfully by defeating Connor Patton of Paola, 3-2. He went on to pin Reed Bowker of Shawnee Mission Northwest in the quarters. Bryce Shoemaker of Baldwin, ranked second in Class 4A at 126, pinned Heckman in the semifinal.

Heckman went on to take a 3-1 decision over Kenny Noll of Topeka-Highland Park in the consolation semifinal and a 7-6 verdict over Bonner's Austin Cobb in the third-place match.

Metcalf pinned Nicklas Hagenback of Blue Valley Southwest in the 170-pound quarters then lost to Sumner's Jaysson Tansey in the semifinals. In consolation, Metcalf pinned LaPhonso McKinnis of SMNW in the semis and won a 4-3 decision over Eudora's Lucas Becker in the third-place match.

Tavenaro also wrestled-in successfully at 182 by taking a 10-2 major decision over Sean Maxwell of Bishop Miege. He pinned Bonner's Patrick Ballard in the quarterfinal. Darien Willis of Sumner pinned Tavenaro in the semifinal.

Tavenaro took a 4-0 decision over Baldwin's Mario Garcia in the consolation semifinal. He won the third-place match by the same score over Atchison's Jared Wilburn.

John Hughes was 3-2, losing both times to the same wrestler at 152. He moved into the championship quarterfinal with a pin over Bonner's Coby Hobbs, who was wrestling unatached to help fill out the bracket. Hughes lost to Paola's Tanner Staats, 9-1, in the quarterfinal.

In consolation, Hughes pinned SMNW's Kyle Zarda in the quarterfinal. He took a 7-1 decision over Baldwin's Colton Horne in the semifinal. Staats won the rematch for third place by pinfall.

Each of Fort Scott's other wrestlers won at least once. Cole Stewart pinned Greg Neria of Highland Park in the opening round of the 106-pound bracket. He lost in the quarterfinal to BVSW's Adam Pelfrey on a technical fall. In consolation, Stewart was eliminated by D.J. Ballard, a Bonner Springs wrestler competing unattached, via pin.

Race Kastl wrestled 145 pounds. He was pinned in the championship quarters by BVSW's Matt McWhorter. He pinned SMNW's Josh Keegan in the consolation quarters but was eliminated by Eudora's Thaius Boyd, 9-1, in the consolation semis.

Daniel Varner was pinned in the first round at 160 by Aaron Pickett of Bonner Springs, who is ranked No. 4 by the KWCA. He pinned Paola's Josiah Hadle in his first consolation match and was eliminated via pin by Paul Grieco of Blue Valley Southwest.

B.J. Wilson was pinned in his first match at 220 by Jerad Carson of Blue Valley Southwest. He went on to pin Eudora's Justus Merz in the consolation quarterfinal. Highland Park's Jesse Gardenhire pinned Wilson in the consolation semis.

The Tigers will compete in the Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Classic this Friday and Saturday. This has become one of the largest tournaments in Kansas in its short history, bringing in teams from all classes of Kansas wrestling as well as some teams from Missouri and other states.

NOTES -- Fort Scott will be the host site for the Class 4A Regional Tournament, which will be held February 17 and 18 at the FSHS gymnasium. Fifteen schools will be in attendance including all nine Southeast Kansas League schools, Anderson County, Prairie View and Osawatomie of the Pioneer League and Louisburg, Ottawa and Paola of the Frontier League....
