Turnovers trip 'Hound women

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Fort Scott Community College's women may have been trying too hard to win Saturday's Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division contest with Allen at Arnold Arena.

Head coach Diana Couch said that she would be honest with anyone who asked her how the Greyhounds lost to the Red Devils, 58-42, after they had fought back to tie the game 25-25 at the half.

"It was all mental," Couch said. "We're physically able. We mentally took ourselves out of the game.

"We still worry about making mistakes. At one point, I told them there was no more game plan, just go. And then they did well and they did it within the offense."

Thirty-three turnovers -- which Couch said were completely unforced -- didn't help things. They allowed Allen (1-1 East, 6-8 overall) to score baskets in transition during a 12-0 run that saw the Red Devils up 37-27 with 12:47 remaining in the contest.

Allen also led 12-4 after 9 1/2 minutes of play in the first half. But the Greyhounds (0-2, 5-8) began to scrap back and forged an 18-18 tie with 3:10 left on Jataeva Arnold's layup.

Brittany Pearl hit a 3-point shot from the left wing and Jolee Sharp scored in transition to give the 'Hounds a 23-21 lead with 1 1/2 minutes to go. Allen's Kayla Morton tied it 30 seconds later with a layup.

The teams traded free throws to end the half. Sharp hit a pair for Fort Scott with 52 seconds left. Ebonie Jones made two with 43 seconds left.

Burgandie Lewis put Fort Scott ahead by two with a jumper to start the second half. But it was just a minute later that Jones connected on a 3-point shot that sparked Allen's run.

The Red Devils went on another run of 16-2 later in the half to boost their lead to 55-34. Fort Scott scored 8 of the game's last 14 points.

Sharp led all scorers with 18 points. She made 6 of 9 shots from the field and 6 of 7 at the free-throw line. That was a bounce-back from Wednesday night's game with Cowley in which the Tigers held her to one field-goal attempt all night and 4 total points.

Pearl finished with 10 points for the 'Hounds while Jamie Peel scored 14 to lead Allen. Jones added 13, Rackell Goldson 11 and Brittney Redmond 10 for the Devils.

The 'Hounds shot 38 percent from the floor, making 15 of 40 field-goal attempts. The Devils shot 39 percent on 22 of 57.

Fort Scott outrebounded Allen, 34-32, with Sharp hauling down 7 boards. Sharp also had 6 steals.

The Greyhounds will travel to Overland Park Wednesday evening for a division game with Johnson County, ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II.
