Fort Scott High's girls rallied in the game's final minute Tuesday night as the Tigers prevailed over Parsons, 39-36, in a non-league game at the FSHS gymnasium.

Parsons led 36-35 after Taylor Kemp made two free throws with 1:25 remaining. The Vikings (3-2) had the ball again when Mallory Shelton forced a turnover with 50 seconds left.

That led to Maddi Allen's rebound of a teammate's miss for the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds to go. Then Katren Rienbolt picked up her team-leading third steal of the contest, forcing Parsons to foul her. She made both free throws, then rebounded the game's final shot, an airball hoisted by Kemp with two seconds left.

Fort Scott improved to 2-5 on the season with the victory, led by Rienbolt's 18 points.

"It was a good win," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong said. "We did a good job of staying poised in stressful situations at the end."

The Tigers led 11-4 after one period of play but missed their first 8 field-goal attempts of the second as the Vikings rallied to take a one-point lead with 5:17 to go in the second.

Brianne Lawrence broke Fort Scott's scoring drought -- which lasted over nine minutes -- with a stickback with 1:35 left to put the Tigers ahead 13-12.

Sawyer Woodworth put the Vikings ahead again with 10 seconds to go. Rienbolt put the Tigers up 15-14 at the half by making a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining.

Fort Scott's largest lead of the second half was 24-20 with 1:30 to go after baskets by Jillian Lattimer and Lawrence. But Kiralyn Mosier brought Parsons back within one with a 3-point shot.

Rienbolt converted a 3-point play with 1:01 to go to make it 27-23. Woodworth brought the Vikings within one again.

Lawrence extended Fort Scott's lead to 3 points, 30-27, to start the fourth quarter. The Vikes went in front, 34-33, on Mosier's 3-point shot with 2:05 remaining.

Lawrence found Rienbolt wide open under the basket for a layup with a pass from the free-throw line with 1:34 to go to put the Tigers ahead, 35-34. Ironically, Parsons defense was focusing on keeping Lawrence out of the lane.

Lawrence added 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Tigers. Kemp led Parsons with 11 points and Woodworth added 10.

Fort Scott shot 33 percent from the field, making 13 of 39 field-goal attempts, and made 10 of 14 free throws. Parsons shot 30 percent from the floor on 13 of 43 and went 8 of 10 at the free-throw line.

The Tigers outrebounded Parsons, 33-25. Hannah Tourtillott dished 3 assists. Rienbolt picked up 3 steals.

Fort Scott has a week off before traveling to Iola next Tuesday.
