100 YEARS AGO

(1911)

Tribune market reports furnished by A.B. Shipp, weighmaster:

Poultry -- hens and pullets, 8 1/2 cents; young cocks, 6 cents; old cocks, 4 cents; turkeys, 12 cents; geese, 8 cents, ducks, 7 cents.

Livestock -- fat heifers, 3.75; cows, $3.50; hogs, $5; sheep, $4; lambs, $5.

The suit of Ira Landers against the Frisco Railway Co. was settled out of court, the company having paid $6,000. Young Landers has bought a farm with the money and is now living on it. Landers was employed in the roundhouse in this city five or six years ago and had one arm crushed in a hydraulic jack, necessitating its amputation.

C.B. White, clerk of the federal court here, received notice this morning that his office is to be supplied with a new No. 10 Remington typewriter. The bid was awarded to Gus Barlow, general agent for the Remington company with headquarters in Kansas City.

75 YEARS AGO

(1936)

PRESCOTT -- A large frame barn on the E.C. Jackson farm, near Prescott, was completely destroyed by fire early this morning after being struck by a bolt of lightning. R.P. Gorman is tenant on the farm. Several kinds of hay and about 200 bushels of oats burned with the building, but a team of mules was rescued from the flaming barn. No livestock burned. It was reported that insurance covered the loss on the building. Mr. Jackson, who carries mail, is away on a vacation trip. The barn was constructed three years ago after the old barn was destroyed by a cyclone.

The Fort Scott Post Office will be closed Friday, New Year's Day being a holiday on the post office calendar. There will be no delivery service except special delivery.

Ed Ramsey, Uniontown, visited friends in Fort Scott.

J.M. Tresslar is driving a new 1937 black Dodge coupe. He purchased it today from Richardson Motor Co.

Photo caption: "First Day of Issue -- Student nurses Wilma Emrick and Carolyn Lewellen were on hand early this morning to purchase the first sheet of a new four-cent stamp commemorating nurses throughout the nation. The two nurses presented the stamps to Mrs. Lois Schubert, president of the Business and Professional Women. After 38 years as bacteriologist for the Newman-Young Clinic in Fort Scott, Mrs. Lena Welch Odell, wife of Ross Odell, retired Dec. 1. She said it coincides with the Kansas Centennial Year. Mrs. Odell was asked what she most looked forward to and she replied, "staying home and freedom from responsibility."

"Challenger Explosion Is Top News Story (By the Associated Press)

In one terrible moment last January, seven Americans, one of them a dedicated school teacher, perished in a plume of high flames high in the Florida sky. The image so stung the American consciousness that 11 months later it is still ruled the top story of 1986 in a year-end Associated Press poll.

Progressive Mothers Club met at the home of Shirley Palmer with Judy Witt presiding. Bourbon County Home Economist Joyce Fowler talked about grandparent-grandchildren relationships.

Real Estate:

Bonnie E. Irby has purchased a residence at 1424 S. National from Mr. and Mr. Mike Judy. The transaction was handled by Ruby Hixon of Gross Real Estate.

Mr. and Mrs. Darly L. Roller have purchased a residence at 617 Meadow Lane from Mr. and Ms. Phil Harrison. Agent for sellers was John C. Gross III of Gross Real Estate. Agent for the buyers was Robert T. Crain of Crain Realty.
