Saturday, December 10, 2011

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Pittsburg's boys outscored Fort Scott High 11-6 in overtime Friday night and gave the Tigers their first loss of the season in a non-league contest, 56-51.

Fort Scott (3-1) trailed 45-39 with less than four minutes remaining but held the Dragons (2-1) scoreless the remainder of regulation as Tyler Adams connected on a pair of 3-point goals during the rally. He hit a triple with 2:05 left to bring the Tigers within one point. Matt Wright tied the score when he hit the first of two free throws with two minutes remaining. But he missed the second one.

The Purple Dragons managed to work the clock down but committed a turnover with 11 seconds to go. Fort Scott called time out but the play didn't work out as a shot was partially blocked.

Cameron Woodring hit a 3-point shot to bring the Tigers within 49-48 with 1:20 left in over time. But Jordan Fondren made it a 3-point game moments later. Then Pittsburg, now in the double bonus, made 5 of 6 free throws in 52 seconds. Woodring hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Woodring scored 21 points despite playing with an injured knee, going 9 for 9 at the free-throw line. Adams added 13 points as he made three 3-pointers.

Fondren led all scorers with 18 points. Stefan Rich added 14 points.

Pittsburg led 9-7 after one period. The Tigers outscored the Dragons 14-7 in the second as sophomore Jash Pytlowany made back-to-back shots -- the second a 3-pointer -- to make it a 19-13 game with two minutes to go in the half.

Pittsburg scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to go up 26-23. Fondren, who had just 2 points at the half, scored 9 in the quarter. His transition bucket put the Dragons up 32-29. But Woodring made all his free throws after he was fouled on a 3-point shot with 1.8 seconds left to tie the score going into the fourth.

The Dragons scored 8 unanswered points, four by FeDor Lomax, to go up 45-36 with about four minutes left in regulation.

The Tigers will play their home opener Tuesday against Anderson County.
