Fort Scott Community College's men dressed only eight players at Arnold Arena Thursday night. But that didn't stop them from playing one of their most inspired games of the season.

Sophomore Julian Mills seemed determined the will the Greyhounds to victory and Tony McGilveary played in dominating fashion. But it wasn't enough as Fort Scott fell to visiting Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 52-47.

Point guard Mills recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and hauling down 11 rebounds. McGilveary also had a double-double, scoring 13 and bringing down 13 boards.

If anything hurt the 'Hounds (1-10) more than anything else, it was their 3-point shooting. They connected on just 2 of 25 3-point attempts while NEO connected on 8 of 24 -- an 18-point difference right there. Fort Scott also made just 3 of 11 free throws on the night.

The 'Hounds stayed in the contest by controlling the boards, 51-43, and keeping their turnovers relatively low.

Fort Scott led 11-7 before NEO's Bram Nivar sparked a 12-3 run with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 11 minutes to go in the first half.

The Golden Norsemen (6-6) maintained an 8-point margin, still leading 24-16 before Mills scored the final 4 points of the half.

McGilveary hit a turnaround jumper to start the second half. Mills stuck back his own missed shot, then assisted on a transition basket to Desean Miles to put Fort Scott ahead, 26-24 early in the second half.

From there, the teams fought tooth and nail, neither leading by more than 3 points until Nivar made a pair of free throws with 8:22 remaining to put his team ahead, 46-42.

From that point, the defenses took over. The teams scored a combined total of 11 points in the final eight minutes.

Mills brought Fort Scott back within one, 46-45, when he converted a 3-point play with 7:47 to go. Nivar drove in for a layup for NEO to boost the lead up to 3 with 6:06 to go.

Neither team scored again until Mills put in a transition bucket with 1:35 remaining, bringing Fort Scott within 48-47.

Joel Quinones scored a layup for the Norse with 39 seconds to go to make it a 3-point game again. Mills missed a 3-point shot with 28 seconds left and NEO got the rebound.

Because the Greyhounds had committed only 5 team fouls, they had to work quickly to commit two more to get NEO into the one-and-one. But Frank Russell made both ends of his opportunity after the 'Hounds finally committed their seventh foul with 24 seconds to go.

Fort Scott shot 30 percent from the field overall, making 21 of 71 field-goal attempts. They made 19 of 46 two pointers, 41 percent. NEO shot 34 percent overall on 19 of 56.

Cox led the Norsemen with 14 points as he made four 3-pointers. Nivar added 12 points as he made all 4 of his field-goal tries and Quinones added 11.

The Greyhounds have one more game before taking their holiday break, Saturday at 4 p.m. against State Fair, Mo., at Arnold Arena. This will be the third meeting of the season between the teams. The Roadrunners (9-6), who will be coming in on a 6-game winning streak, beat Fort Scott, 88-68, at the Coffeyville Classic on November 11 and again 11 days later in Sedalia, 73-40.
