Short-handed 'Hound women manage split; men swept

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

GREAT BEND -- Fort Scott's women managed to salvage a split in the Barton Classic here over the weekend despite playing the majority of the game they won without one of their key players.

Fort Scott's men, meanwhile, suffered a sweep and fell to 1-9 on the season with their 11th and 12th consecutive losses to junior colleges.

Friday: Barton women 50, Fort Scott 47.

The host Cougars had home-court advantage and five games in hand but the Greyhounds chipped into a 10-point halftime lead (30-20) and got within 46-45 with 1:43 remaining on a Jolee Sharp jumper.

Sharp finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Greyhounds (5-4) while Erica Smith added 8. Blair Bloomfield led Barton (10-4) with 13 points.

Fort Scott, the Jayhawk Conference's leader in rebounding margin (+16.3), outboarded Barton, 37-27. The Greyhounds have also been climbing up the national charts for scoring defense, going into the weekend ranked 21st by the NJCAA.

Friday: Barton men 71, Fort Scott 56.

Tony McGilveary's jumper with 15:37 left in the first half gave Fort Scott a 14-12 lead. The Greyhounds never lead after that but Barton (14-0) couldn't pull away and led just 42-35 at the half.

But after shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half, Fort Scott dropped to 32 percent in the second. Barton remained consistent in the second half and went on to win behind Algie Key's 22 points. Dwayne Brunson added 18 and Carl Wallace finished with 14.

Saturday: Fort Scott women 60, Brown Mackie 49.

Brown Mackie was ranked No. 18 in NJCAA Division II coming into the contest. But the 'Hounds held the Lions to 25-percent field-goal shooting while outrebounding them, 54-40.

This was done without Sharp, who missed most of the game with an injury. Erica Smith stepped up and scored 17 points while hauling down 10 rebounds. Jatavea Arnold had 13 points and 13 boards. Burgandie Lewis hauled down 11 rebounds and Brittany Pearl hit four 3-point shots off the bench as she added 16 points.

Allowing just 49 1/2 points per game over the weekend should drop the Greyhounds' scoring defensive average ever more than their current 51.7 points per game allowed.

Saturday: Pratt men 71, Fort Scott 56.

The Beavers (8-4) connected on 15 of 30 3-point attempts and shot 48 percent from the field overall. Armani Brown knocked in 8 triples as part of an 11-for-19, 30-point night.

Pratt also outrebounded Fort Scott, 42-30 Bryton Hobbs scored 12 points and dished 15 assists. Trae Beck added another 12 points.

Julian Mills and Derrick Thomas each scored 14 points for the 'Hounds. Thomas made 6 of 9 field-goal tries. De'Sean Miles added 10 points. Teance Walton led with 9 rebounds and Mills handed out 8 assists.

Fort Scott's women play at Crowder College in Neosho, Mo., Wednesday night at 6 p.m. According to a release issued by Cottey College, Friday's meeting between the 'Hounds and Comets in Nevada has been postponed.

Fort Scott's men play at home twice this week. Thursday at 7:30, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M will visit. State Fair, Mo., comes to town for a 4 p.m. tipoff Saturday.
