Greyhound rally stalls in 57-36 loss

Thursday, November 24, 2011

MIAMI, Okla. -- Staving off a potential second half comeback, Northeastern A&M earned a 57-36 victory Tuesday night over Fort Scott Community College at the NEO Fieldhouse.

Winning their second straight game, the Golden Norse are 4-4 on the season while the Greyhounds are 1-6.

Sophomore guard Joel Quinones scored eight of his game-high 17 total points in the first 10 minutes of the game with Fort Scott as the Norsemen built a 14-4 cushion. Field goals by Bram Nivar and Cesar Mapeli along with two free throws by Frank Russell contributed to the NEO outburst.

Field goals by Mapeli, Gerardo Isla and two free throws by Steven Hamilton along with one free throw by Jon Bond increased the Norse lead to 21-8 with 5:15 left in the first half.

Greyhounds center Sheldon Hayes sank two straight put-backs to cut the deficit to 21-12 with 3:49 left until intermission.

Five points by Quinones along with field goals by Mapeli, Bond, Isla and a solo free throw by Aaron Francis created a 33-12 halftime cushion for the Norsemen.

Fort Scott went on a 22-6 run in the fist 13 minutes of the second half to reduce the deficit to 39-34. Six points by Teance Walton along with 4 points each by Hayes, De'Sean Miles and Tony McGilveary and baskets by Austin Danner and Julian Miles ignited the Greyhounds' rally.

Over the final seven minutes the Golden Norsemen limited the Greyhounds to one field goal by Walton while reeling off 18 points to produce the final score.

NEO connected on 23 of 55 field-goal attempts -- including 4 of 19 from 3-point range -- for 42 percent from the field.

Walton was the only Greyhound to score in double figures with 10 points.

The Greyhounds managed only 14 of 61, which included a mere 1 of 14 from the 3-point area, for 23 percent from the field. Fort Scott sank 8 of 10 for 80 percent at the line.

Fort Scott's 36-point total is the second lowest since the shot clock was instituted and the lowest since the Greyhounds scored just 37 against Garden City in November of 2007.

Aaron Francis grabbed seven rebounds as NEO held a 43-40 edge on the boards. Walton collected 10 rebounds to lead the Hounds.

Fort Scott plays at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
