Dawn Bryant is a pet lover, and she has turned that love into her own new business. Bryant opened her new pet store, called Everything Pets, on Nov. 12 in a space in a building that previously housed Sports Stuff located at Sixth Street and National Avenue.
The store carries many different types of pets, as well as food and a variety of other products for cats and dogs, birds, reptiles and other small animals.
"I've always wanted to have my own business," Bryant said. "We're a pet-loving family."
Bryant said the business has been busy since opening Saturday.
"We've had a lot of foot traffic," she said. "On Saturday we had 200 people in here."
The store is full of products "for any small animal," Bryant said. Items available include cages, aquariums, food, grooming supplies and many others.
Bryant said she plans to carry dog and cat food by the end of the week.
The most popular item in the store to date, Bryant said, of which she is consistently sold out, is crickets, on which lizards and other reptiles like to munch.
"I've determined that Fort Scott has an overpopulation of lizards," she said. "I sell a lot of bird food, too."
Bryant's small staff consists of herself and her groomer, Kandette Jones. She gets regular help from her kids.
"My kids help after school cleaning cages, feeding and watering," she said. "They've really enjoyed it."
Other than products, the store also offers grooming services and spa treatments such as nail care and facial scrubs for pets. Bryant said her store carries many essential pet products, and she plans to slowly grow the business.
"I'll see what the community wants," she said. "Once I'm established, I'll get some unique items."
