Greyhound women split at Allen classic

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

IOLA -- Fort Scott Community College's women's basketball team split its games at the Allen Citizens Bank Classic here over the weekend. Friday, the Greyhounds (2-3) defeated the Bethel College junior varsity. 59-49. Saturday, Fort Scott lost to Cottey, the 11th-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, 68-64.

In Saturday's game, Fort Scott High School graduate Jolee Sharp scored 30 points on 11-of-17 field-goal shooting and had 10 rebounds. It was the first 30-point game for a Greyhound since Leondra Doomes-Stephens recorded her eighth and final one (31 pts.) against Cloud County in the first round of the 2009 Region VI Tournament.

Sharp also had a double-double in Friday's game against Bethel, scoring 23 points and hauling down 12 rebounds.

Fort Scott led Friday's game 35-18 at the half. The 'Hounds outrebounded the Threshers, 41-26, with Jataeva Arnold bringing down 13 rebounds herself.

Another FSHS grad, Megan McDermed, came off the bench for the 'Hounds to add 9 points.

Fort Scott matched Cottey early on in Saturday's game. Kylie Eldridge sparked the Comets with a few 3-point goals to help put her team in front, 37-28, at the half.

Cottey led by as much as 16 points in the second half. Fort Scott began switching defenses, which threw the Comets off and helped the 'Hounds chip into the lead.

Fort Scott outscored Cottey, 36-31, in the second half.

We did an excellent job tonight" FSCC head coach Diana Couch said. "Although Cottey walked away with the win. I really feel in terms of our programs growth we won tonight. I am so proud of my players because it was the first time that it just all came together. The light went on this evening and I think it just might stay on now."
