Crowder roughs up Greyhounds, 68-39

Saturday afternoon's game didn't begin well for Fort Scott Community College's women. And then it got worse.

What began as a quest to find a point guard who could execute the offense turned into an odyssey that made it seem as though there was a lid sealed tightly on the basket and that there was grease on the ball as the Greyhounds lost to Crowder (Mo.), 68-39 in the final game of the Gladbach Classic.

Independence began the day by smacking down Southwestern Iowa, 64-39, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Greyhounds (1-1) scored just 6 points in the first 12 minutes of play as head coach Diana Couch tried to find a point guard who could run the offense. All three -- Cheyanne Ivy, Kate Atherton and Jamisha Crawford are freshmen -- and an indication of just how had that was can be found in the fact that the Greyhounds had just two assists the entire game.

"Freshman mentality," Couch said. "(They) don't know how to get open. Not used to the physical play in college. It's something that they need to work on. It was no surprise. I told them that Crowder do that to us. If you saw Southwestern (Friday night), you saw where our weakness was. And it's wing entry passes. It's kind of hard to adjust to something that's effort. We started going to a two-guard front a little bit. But we started getting hurt a little bit on that as well when we tried to kick out.

Fort Scott finished the game with 44 turnovers. They had 27 of those in the first half. Crowder had just 16 steals, indicating that the majority of the turnovers cam from Greyhound errors versus Roughrider hustle.

Crowder (2-1) got on a roll offensively and scored 14 consecutive points to extend a 4-point lead to 24-6 with 3:41 left in the half. Fort Scott had already committed 22 turnovers by then.

The 'Hounds finally got something going near the end of the half, scoring 10 of the last 13 -- Megan McDermed capping the run with a 3-point goal from the left side with 6 seconds to go -- to get within 27-16 at the half.

But Crowder held Fort Scott without a field goal for the first 11:22 of the second half, scoring 17 unanswered points to go up 49-19 with 11:34 left. Hannah Ritter, who led the Roughriders with 15 points, hit a 3-point shot to make it 52-21 with 10:07 remaining.

Ashlie Baker hit Fort Scott's first field goal of the half with 9:38 left in the game, ending an 0-for-9 start to the field from the field. The only points the Greyhounds had in the half before that came on 5 free throws.

It would be another 4:55 before Fort Scott got its second fielder of the half on a stickback by freshman forward Burgandie Lewis, who had a double-double for the 'Hounds with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

"Any time you work hard and something doesn't go right, you stop working hard.," Couch said. 'And when you stop working hard, you figure, 'Well, why should I be doing it?' and everything falls apart and it becomes a domino effect for us offensively.

"I'm still proud of them defensively. I thought they did a great job. I don't know what the total was but at halftime, Crowder was shooting 16 percent (from three) and they're a 3-point shooting team, so I think we did our job on that. So defensively, thank God we did some good things. The points out there are second-chance shots, not rebounding properly. So rebounding and passing, I learned today what things we need to keep working on."

Crowder shot 56 percent from the field in the second half on 14 of 25 and finished the game at 42 percent on 25 of 60. The Roughriders were held to 5-of-21 from 3-point range. Fort Scott made only 5 field goals in each half and finished at 24 percent on 10 of 41. The 'Hounds were 1 of 7 from triple territory.

Terai Sadler added 14 points to the Crowder attack while Jordan Hunter chipped in with 10. Jolee Sharp was the only other 'Hound in double figures with 11 points while also collecting 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

One thing the Greyhounds did well was rebound. They had 49 boards to just 24 for Crowder. Usually, the majority of rebounds in a game are defensive but since the 'Riders made a high percentage of shots, this means the 'Hounds had a good deal of offensive boards and then were unable to convert their second chances.

Fort Scott played in Leavenworth Monday night against the St. Mary junior varsity. Results from that contest will be printed in a later edition. This weekend, the 'Hounds will play at the Allen Classic in Iola. They will face the Bethel junior varsity Friday and Cottey Saturday.
