A free educational program about the importance of vitamin D will be offered at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 at the Cavalry Crossing apartments community room, 201 W. 23rd St., Fort Scott, according to a news release.

The presenter will be Nancy Schuster, Kansas State University Extension Family and Consumer Sciences agent in Anderson County.

Vitamin D is important in building and maintaining strong bones.

Many studies are now looking at vitamin D's role in health and disease prevention.

At the same time, current research shows that more than three out of every four Americans have inadequate vitamin D levels.

Topics to be covered during the one-hour program include the sun's role, why vitamin D is important, how much is enough, and ways to boost vitamin D levels.

The public is invited to the program which is sponsored by K-State Research and Extension, Southwind Extension District.
