Old Settlers Day packed with events and prizes

The 106th Annual Old Settlers Picnic on Sept. 3, 4 and 5, kicked off with a Kids Fishing Derby sponsored by Kansas Wildlife and Parks with more than 40 participants.

Jaxon Pitts received the biggest fish trophy with a 28" fish; the smallest fish trophy went to Dreyton Herring at 5"; most fish, 5 and under category, went to Tate Crystal, first place with 10, Olivia Huhman, second place with six and Nathanel Godsell, third place with two (biggest). The 6 to 10-year-old category went to Luke George, first place with five, Timothy Smith, second place with four (biggest) and Dreyton Herring, third place with four. In the 11 to 15-year-old category first place went to Kaylyn Crystal with two (biggest), second place to Ben George with two and third place to Dalton Clifton with one.

The fishing derby was followed by the Uniontown Saddle Club's 25th Annual Ranch Rodeo and a teen dance in the city park.

Sunday began with a community church service in the park.

The Uniontown High School junior class sponsored a Poker Run with more than 40 participants. Miss Page came in first, followed by Austin Jefferis, second. Worst hand went to Curtis Ramsey.

The evening started with the 45th Annual Old Settlers Youth Rodeo at the rodeo arena and a gospel showcase featuring Cindy Powell in the city park.

Labor Day began with horseshoe pitching in the park. First went to Jeff and Daniel, second to Terry and Russ and third to Randy and Ronnie.

The baby contest had 21 participants in five categories: Boys 0-6 months --first to Kreedyn Buckman, son of Candy Wyatt, Fort Scott, second to Jaxon Abel Palmer, son of Brandon and Heather Palmer, Garnett, Kan.; Girls 0-6 months -- first to Aria Dotche-Togbe, daughter of Moise Dotche-Togbe and Katie Kness, Pittsburg, Kan., second to Olivia Jolea Woods, daughter of Jordan Woods and Audrey Dixon, Uniontown; Boys 6-12 months -- first to Caleb Sammon, son of Josh and Melissa Sammon, Walnut, Kan., second to Kyron Kegler, son of Jason and Terra Kegler, Iola, Kan.; Girls 6-12 months -- first to Brylynn Koppa, daughter of Derek Koppa and Randi Shaw, Fort Scott, second to Reagan Whisenhunt, daughter of James and Carissa Whisenhunt, Fort Scott; Boys 12-18 months -- first to Lane Kenneth Lord, son of Ty and Wendee Lord, Uniontown, and second to Collin Jones, son of Shaun Jones and Jamie Mason, Pittsburg, Kan.

The Masonic Lodge sponsored an Ident A Child Program throughout the day.

The Children's Parade winners were:

Pets -- first to Tate Crystal with Bandit, Made in America, second to Brianna and Scooter;

Theme -- first to Blake Ervin, "God Bless America" wagon, second to Zoey Long, U.S.A. wagon;

Costume -- Drew and Aiden Holt as Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross;

Bikes -- first to Heston Stewart, second to Brycen Stewart, third to Jakeob Stewart;

Battery Operated -- tie between Tyler and Lane Lord's "God Bless America and Li'l Boys" and Jewel Endicott's "American Pride."The parade was kicked off with the singing of the national anthem by Veronica Harrison, followed by the pledge of allegiance led by Master of ceremonies Matt Wood. The prayer of dedication was offered by Pastor Marty Dewitt, followed by the singing of "God Bless America" by Tommy Bradbury Miller.

Grand Marshall Ruth Wilson has maintained a Uniontown address for almost 97 years. She was driven by her son, Bill, and accompanied by daughter-in-law, Marj, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The parade entry winners were as follows:

Best Church Float -- first to Bethel Community Church, second to Uniontown Methodist Church, third to First Missionary Baptist Church;

Best Theme Oriented Float -- first to Uniontown 4-H Club, second to Imagination Station;

School Floats -- first to UHS junior class, second to UHS sophomore class and third to UHS freshman class;

Antique Cars -- Ron and Bonita Jones; and

ATV -- Clay Brillhart.

Bourbon County Fire District 3 was represented by Unit 311, 312, and 313 from Uniontown, Unit 351 and 353 from Devon, Unit 362 from Hiatville and Unit 2 from Redfield. District 3 includes stations at Uniontown, Bronson, Fulton, Mapleton, Devon and Hiatville.

Following the parade, there was a picnic in the park. Uniontown FFA served barbecue meals, the Uniontown United Methodist Church served Chicken Mary's chicken dinners, and there were vendors in the park providing funnel cakes, corn dogs, cotton candy, homemade ice cream, clothing, hats, toys, jewelry, etc.

After the picnic, the "Old Settlers" were recognized and contests were enjoyed south of the park on Second Street, at the gazebo and on the basketball court. "Old Settlers" prizes were sponsored by Mary Kay's Place, Uniontown.

Oldest Man was Jake Underwood at 92 years; Oldest Woman was Vernie Camerne at 100 years, 364 days; Couple Married Longest was Leo and Natalie Comstock at 66 years; Person Traveling Farthest was Ruth Binford Ricci, who traveled 1,794 miles to attend; and Person Maintaining Uniontown Address the Longest was again Ruth Wilson for 96 years, 11 months.

All during the afternoon, names were drawn for merchant drawings.

This was capped off with the raffle drawing winners announced: Josh Ramsey, Topeka, Drew Holt, Redfield, and Chelle Riley, Uniontown.
